I’m just getting up from a warm, cozy nap next to my munchkin, Josh. He apparently fell asleep waiting for us to get home. I wish he could have been there today to see his Mommy and Daddy crossing that finish line. Maybe when he’s a little older he’ll be there with us. It’s an accomplishment that you want to share with all those you love. I called him the minute we finished and he said, “Wow, Mommy.” I don’t know if at the age of three he quite understood what it meant, but he seemed to understand that whatever we did there was a reason to say wow...

Natalie Morales on MSNBCNatalie Morales (born June 6, 1972 in Taiwan) joined NBC News "The Today Show" as a National Correspondent in February 2006. Morales also co-anchors for the program and fills in regularly at the news desk. Previously she was an anchor for MSNBC. Morales joined MSNBC as an anchor and correspondent in March 2002.
While at MSNBC and NBC News, Morales has anchored a number of major breaking news stories including the Battle for White House 2004; the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; the Iraqi prisoner abuse; Operation Iraqi Freedom; the Shuttle Columbia explosion, the blackouts of 2003; the Washington D.C. area sniper shootings; and the Scott Peterson case. Additionally, she was named one of Hispanic Magazine’s Top Trendsetters of 2003 [1].
Prior to joining MSNBC, Morales served as a weekend anchor/reporter and morning co-anchor at WVIT-TV in Hartford, CT, where she reported on the Columbine shootings, Tropical Storm Floyd, Decision 2000 and the terrorist attacks on September 11. She also co-hosted and reported for the Emmy-nominated documentary, “Save Our Sound, ” a joint production with WNBC-TV New York on preserving the Long Island Sound. Morales began her on-air career at News 12 – The Bronx, as the first morning anchor. Morales also served as cameraperson, editor and producer for News 12 – The Bronx. In 1999, she was voted one of the 50 Most Influential Latinas for her news coverage and reports by the Hispanic daily newspaper El Diario La Prensa.
Previously, Morales spent two years working behind the scenes at Court TV. Morales, who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, was born in Taiwan and spent the first 18 years of her life living overseas in Panama, Brazil, and Spain as an Air Force “brat.” Morales is half Puerto Rican and half Brazilian.[2]
Morales holds a bachelor of arts degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, with dual majors in journalism and Latin American studies. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and son.

Now that I've just praised Today, I now come to dump on it. For starters, Natalie Morales. What is her purpose on days when Ann Curry is there? She just sort of sits there and smiles, waiting for someone to switch her off.

Why She is Where She is Today
Travel and determination have gotten Natalie Morales where she is today.
"There's nothing like a pat on the back after a four hour news marathon, and getting recognized for my work as a journalist. That is foremost, and I hope people regard me as that." She said "But I'll take the flatter too."
Natalie was recently named correspondent for the NBC network early morning gem "The Today Show," and was in the running to replace Katie Couric as the co-host of the three-hour program.
Morales was born into a military family, her father a member of the Air Force. Being half Brazilian and half Puerto Rican, the military provided important insight into her heritage.
"Living in places like Brazil, where I learned Portuguese, along with Panama and Spain, where I learned Spanish, allowed me to be in touch with the Hispanic culture." She explained, "It is such an integral part of who I am."
In these places she learned the importance of family in the culture. Spain according to Morales is very "cosmopolitan" and "sophisticated." While in Panama and Brazil the people live very simply.
"There is a vast socio-economic class with a very small middle class and a lot of poverty."
Women are also not considered equals. "Machismo," is the very prevalent theme as males play the dominant role in the households.
"Here in the U.S. I think we live to work." She said, "family priorities can fall to the wayside," Morales explained.
"There is an interesting difference between the cultures," she continued "In Hispanic families, children generally live with their families until they marry, and attend local universities," she said.
"I appreciate all the opportunities our country affords us, we know that with hard work and determination the American dream is real and attainable." She said "But family is the key to that dream."
Being a military brat is something that is shared by many journalists.
"They share these common characteristics: quick thinkers, good communicators, down to earth, friendly and able to adapt to new situations." Morales explained. "I know I have benefited professionally as well as by having experienced and being exposed to more than most."
Morales attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she had a dual major of journalism and Latin American studies. Her senior year she was the residential assistant in an all freshmen dorm.
"I was always a good writer and storyteller as a kid. My dad also recorded just about every major moment in my life." She remembered, "It was almost a natural progression for me to choose broadcast journalism as my career."
But as many students face hardship trying to find a job out of college, so did she.

No Loss
Loss of Couric no loss to NBC ratings
NEW YORK, NY, United States (UPI) -- In the first full week after Katie Couric`s departure from 'Today,' NBC`s New York morning show beat ABC`s 'Good Morning America' by 1.13 million viewers.
With the exception of NBC`s Olympics coverage and Couric`s final shows, the gap was the greatest between the morning competitors in the past two years, the New York Daily News reported.
'Today' with Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Al Roker and Natalie Morales averaged 5.6 million viewers; 'Good Morning America' averaged 4.5 million and 'The Early Show' on CBS had 2.4 million.

Speculation about Morales' candidacy to replace Katie Couric as anchor of Today was put to rest when Meredith Vieira was named Couric's replacement. Morales had been previously thought to be a candidate, along with Campbell Brown and Ann Curry.[1] It is believed that Morales will stay in her role in the third hour of 'Today' due to the fact that she signed a long-term contract with NBC News for the next four years. Judging from some of the book's photos aired during the segment Curry is in good liberal company. Among the photos featured were ones of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright playing chess, White House correspondent Helen Thomas in pearls, Sen. Barbara Mikulski in a lab coat, author Kitty Kelley sporting a mink stole and even former Rep. Patricia Schroeder in a super hero costume.
