'Today' Teaches History, Shows Light at End of Recession Tunnel

NBC morning show assumes economy is in recession, compares current conditions to 1973, 1987 and 2001.

Though economists are less than certain, a U.S. economy in recession is a foregone conclusion for many in the media. The April 3 NBC “Today” show offered a light at the end of an economic tunnel, however. [...] Natalie Morales declared recessions and booms are “all part of a never-ending economic cycle” and told viewers not to panic “because it’s psychologically driven.”

“In the last 50 years the U.S. economy has recovered from six recessions and after each there were periods of great booms,” Morales reported. “So, many experts say to really understand what’s going on and perhaps to benefit in the long run, you need to take a lesson from history.” [...] Morales began with the 1973 recession, spurred in large part by rocketing oil and gasoline prices as a result of the OPEC embargo against the United States.

“Government spending on the Vietnam War coupled with rising unemployment created a slump. America was in a recession,” Morales said. “Inflation doubled in 1972 to more than 6 percent and reached an all-time high (11.04 percent) the following year.”

Morales didn’t provide context to explain how current conditions compared to the recessionary conditions in the early ‘70s. Unemployment was 4.8 percent in February 2008, compared to 6.5 percent in January 1972 and a high of 9.1 percent in March 1975.

Inflation in 2007 was ~~4.1 percent~~ [well above 10%], compared to 6.2 percent in 1973 and 11.03 percent in 1974.

But, Morales said optimistically, “Just six months after its lowest point, the economy saw growth in the double digits. Suddenly people were buying again.”

“By the mid-1980s things started to really boom. Big hair, big clothes and big bank accounts were in,” she said, setting up for the stock market crash – a drop of more than 500 points – on Oct. 19, 1987.

Much like today, when the media seem eager to declare the economy in a recession or even a depression, fears of economic turmoil were prevalent in 1987. But optimism won out. “Despite fears of another depression,” Morales noted, “the market rallied immediately after the crash, regaining nearly 300 points by the end of that week.”

Kathy Lee Gifford joins 'Today'

Kathie Lee Gifford is heading back into the waters of daytime television, joining NBC's "Today" show next week.

Gifford, the long-time co-host of "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee," will co-host the fourth hour of "Today" with Hoda Kotb. She begins her tenure on Monday, April 7.
"I am excited to welcome Kathie Lee to Today,' " executive producer Jim Bell says. "She is a morning television icon and is on a short list of personalities known by her first name alone. We are looking forward to her signature warmth and sense of humor in the fourth hour."
The fourth hour of "Today" debuted in September with co-hosts Kotb, Ann Curry and Natalie Morales. Curry and Morales will leave the last hour but keep their roles with the rest of the show, Curry as news anchor from 7 to 9 a.m. ET and co-host (with Al Roker) of the 9 a.m. hour and Morales as national correspondent for "Today" and other NBC News programs.
Gifford says of her new gig, "I am truly honored to join the Today' show family, many of whom have been friends and colleagues of mine for years. And I'm especially looking forward to working with Hoda, a bright and beautiful woman I admire very much. Together I hope we will bring a fresh and fun perspective to the topics that affect all of our daily lives."
Gifford is best known for her co-hosting "Live" opposite Regis Philbin from 1988-2000 (the two first teamed up in 1985 in New York; the show went national three years later). She was also a correspondent for "Good Morning America" in the early 80s and has several albums and numerous acting and stage credits.

The pregnancy was the best news for the couple, as they have been trying to get pregnant for awhile.

When I found out I was pregnant, it was the best news I’d gotten all year. We had been trying for a long time. Most people think you can just decide to have a child, but it just doesn’t work that way.

This will be the second baby for the Today family as Giada De Laurentiis is due to give birth to her first child -- a daughter -- next month.

The Nordic monarchies are very down to earth, but they don't come much more real than Prince Haakon. Here's a monarchy that's 1,000 years old, with all the traditions and trappings that that brings. Not your regular royal marriage, but the couple now have two more children and seem blissfully happy...and incredibly busy. Moving with the [one world] times is essential if a monarchy is to stay relevant, he says.

The day began with a cabinet meeting in the palace. Prince Haakon and the King were both in ceremonial uniform, Cameraman Brian Prentke and soundman David Moodie were wearing suits (now there's a rare sight), and they were having trouble keeping up with the prince as he followed a hectic program of meetings, greetings and discussions, a reception for a charity for the hard of hearing, a long sit-down interview with Natalie in his office, then off to a lengthy briefing by the Foreign Minister and experts on his forthcoming trip as a UN Development ambassador to Burundi in Central Africa. By this point he was at ease with us and invited Natalie to take part in the meeting. The trip sounded challenging; there's a lot to do, said the prince, but there are positive signs. Alleviating poverty, he said, is the only way we will have peace and he's ready to do whatever it takes. “What we're trying to achieve, the bottom line is that [serfs] are able to live dignified lives, " he told Natalie. The day ended with yet another appearance at a university prize-giving ceremony and then back to the palace, where the royal family hosted an evening [orgie] in full regalia.

[But] if you scan through the TV, you're not seeing a lot of us on the air. People often say to me in disbelief, "Oh, you're Hispanic? I would have never guessed." And I say, "What do you mean? What is a Hispanic to you?" So I constantly want to remind people not to be judgmental or have a certain view of what we're supposed to look like.

"A long way gone," but hitting home in this Starbucks nation

As I was ordering my tall skim latte two weeks ago at Starbucks, my eyes -- always looking for something new -- wandered to their CD collection and its latest contribution to the greater global good, a new book called A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. I picked it up and started reading, then immediately had to buy it. It was certainly a long way from this Starbucks on Park Avenue to this young boy's tragic story in Sierra Leone during that country's civil war in the 1990s.

Coincidentally, as I am now midway through the book, last week I read an article about it in the New York Times (March 10) and was glad to learn it has had great success in sales and Ishmael Beah is generating so much buzz. Perhaps it was a risky choice for Starbucks, but it proves perhaps we are hungering for more depth and a greater understanding of what is happening around the world.

I can only imagine what the once boy soldier must now think when he sees people buying their lattes or cappuccinos and a copy of his memoir -- thankfully, he has come a long long way.

Lords of the Rings

I spent the weekend in Santa Monica with my family basking in California's almost always perfect weather-- when I witnessed what might be just a local phenomenon... A "ring culture." Who they are I have no clue, but what they can do as they swing from ring to ring is most impressive-- like trapeze artists at a circus. Why I write about this is because it's an interesting (at least I think so) observation in human behavior -- and particularly an observation about men... Though there are women "ringers" too.

People often tell me how wonderful my job is because I meet the most interesting people and cover some of the most incredible world events. Believe me, I consider myself blessed every day for the opportunities I have been given. Today, though, forget all the newsmakers and celebrities... I met two of the most inspirational young women who not only made my day, but gave me so much hope as they have given so many others with their incredible act of kindness and heroism.
They are Rachel and Kelsi Okun... sisters from McLean, Virginia and all of 12 and 8 years old respectively, but wiser than most people my age. Rachel and Kelsi were so inspired by the sacrifice that our troops and their families are making, they decided to do something about it. Last year they started their "brainblast" and put together the first of now two historical Treasure Hunt cluebooks to help raise money to send thanks and care packages to our troops and their families. With one workbook, they raised over $3.5 MILLION dollars.

For the last two weeks Nightly News has been bringing you some very personal stories about what we all will face at some point in our lifetime: helping our loved ones as they grow older.

Unfortunately, too many family and friends tend to not want to deal with it, or don't know how to, and therefore they drop off the radar at a time when they're needed most.

What I worry about most now is the genetics of Early Onset. There is a very clear link that if one parent gets it early that future generations will also suffer with it. I hope and pray all the groundbreaking research being done now to prevent or even find a cure for Alzheimer's is successful.

On a final note, this has made me realize how important it is to live for today rather than always planning for our tomorrows.

Those were the very words I used to describe Anna Nicole Smith in a Dateline report this past weekend, and sadly it seems to be the most apt description for Anna Nicole Smith. I wondered when I first heard the news how much people would care about her death given how recklessly she lived her life. All cable and even main networks went into overdrive giving Anna Nicole’s death every last bit of attention – attention she always craved in life. [...] The train-wreck quality of her life has been talked about much these last few days. Maybe that’s why we paid so much attention in the beginning. Not many who knew her could say they didn’t see this tragic end coming. While we have yet to conclusively learn what killed her, I chose to believe a kinder version of events. Yes I know prescription drugs were found in her room and yes, she had a history of abuse. Yes, she probably did die much like her young son Daniel, as we may learn in the coming days. I think though, what killed her, and what made her all human to us in the end, is she died a woman with a broken heart.

Natalie Morales on MSNBC

Natalie Morales (born June 6, 1972 in Taiwan) joined NBC News "The Today Show" as a National Correspondent in February 2006. Morales also co-anchors for the program and fills in regularly at the news desk. Previously she was an anchor for MSNBC. Morales joined MSNBC as an anchor and correspondent in March 2002.

While at MSNBC and NBC News, Morales has anchored a number of major breaking news stories including the Battle for White House 2004; the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; the Iraqi prisoner abuse; Operation Iraqi Freedom; the Shuttle Columbia explosion, the blackouts of 2003; the Washington D.C. area sniper shootings; and the Scott Peterson case. Additionally, she was named one of Hispanic Magazine’s Top Trendsetters of 2003 [1].

Prior to joining MSNBC, Morales served as a weekend anchor/reporter and morning co-anchor at WVIT-TV in Hartford, CT, where she reported on the Columbine shootings, Tropical Storm Floyd, Decision 2000 and the terrorist attacks on September 11. She also co-hosted and reported for the Emmy-nominated documentary, “Save Our Sound, ” a joint production with WNBC-TV New York on preserving the Long Island Sound. Morales began her on-air career at News 12 – The Bronx, as the first morning anchor. Morales also served as cameraperson, editor and producer for News 12 – The Bronx. In 1999, she was voted one of the 50 Most Influential Latinas for her news coverage and reports by the Hispanic daily newspaper El Diario La Prensa.

Previously, Morales spent two years working behind the scenes at Court TV. Morales, who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, was born in Taiwan and spent the first 18 years of her life living overseas in Panama, Brazil, and Spain as an Air Force “brat.” Morales is half Puerto Rican and half Brazilian.[2]

Morales holds a bachelor of arts degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, with dual majors in journalism and Latin American studies. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and son.

Travel and determination have gotten Natalie Morales where she is today.

"There's nothing like a pat on the back after a four hour news marathon, and getting recognized for my work as a journalist. That is foremost, and I hope people regard me as that." She said "But I'll take the flatter too."

Natalie was recently named correspondent for the NBC network early morning gem "The Today Show," and was in the running to replace Katie Couric as the co-host of the three-hour program.

Morales was born into a military family, her father a member of the Air Force. Being half Brazilian and half Puerto Rican, the military provided important insight into her heritage.

"Living in places like Brazil, where I learned Portuguese, along with Panama and Spain, where I learned Spanish, allowed me to be in touch with the Hispanic culture." She explained, "It is such an integral part of who I am."

In these places she learned the importance of family in the culture. Spain according to Morales is very "cosmopolitan" and "sophisticated." While in Panama and Brazil the people live very simply.

"There is a vast socio-economic class with a very small middle class and a lot of poverty."

Women are also not considered equals. "Machismo," is the very prevalent theme as males play the dominant role in the households.

"Here in the U.S. I think we live to work." She said, "family priorities can fall to the wayside," Morales explained.

"There is an interesting difference between the cultures," she continued "In Hispanic families, children generally live with their families until they marry, and attend local universities," she said.

"I appreciate all the opportunities our country affords us, we know that with hard work and determination the American dream is real and attainable." She said "But family is the key to that dream."

Being a military brat is something that is shared by many journalists.

"They share these common characteristics: quick thinkers, good communicators, down to earth, friendly and able to adapt to new situations." Morales explained. "I know I have benefited professionally as well as by having experienced and being exposed to more than most."

Morales attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she had a dual major of journalism and Latin American studies. Her senior year she was the residential assistant in an all freshmen dorm.

"I was always a good writer and storyteller as a kid. My dad also recorded just about every major moment in my life." She remembered, "It was almost a natural progression for me to choose broadcast journalism as my career."
But as many students face hardship trying to find a job out of college, so did she.

Hey got a new book? Want it featured on the Today show? Try putting Ann Curry on the cover! The new book Extraordinary Women: Fantasies Revealed was featured in the 9:30 half hour of this morning's Today show. The cover of the book happens to feature Curry actually embracing the Earth. Curry even appeared as a guest on the segment with the book's authors. Natalie Morales conducted the interview and revealed Ann's not-so-secret fantasy: "And Ann the reason you are holding the globe is you talk about wanting to be a humanitarian, which as a journalist, I mean you do, I mean that's really a priority in your life." But one of the book's authors Ilene Leventhal pointed out Curry, as a liberal crusading journalist, is already living her dream: "I said to Ann, I said, 'Ann you already are a humanitarian.'"

Judging from some of the book's photos aired during the segment Curry is in good liberal company. Among the photos featured were ones of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright playing chess, White House correspondent Helen Thomas in pearls, Sen. Barbara Mikulski in a lab coat, author Kitty Kelley sporting a mink stole and even former Rep. Patricia Schroeder in a super hero costume.

NBC's Today Show host Matt Lauer and NBC News correspondent Natalie Morales are taking a jaunt over to the Sci-Fi Channel to host two specials for the genre cable network.

In many ways, I like Ann Curry the most because she seems to be the most sincere. But as the morning show co-anchor on NBC, she falls a little short. First, if I had to categorize her, she's a bit "somber" in mood as compared to Couric or Natalie Morales (or even Campbell Brown or any of the other MSNBC fill ins for that matter) and people want happy/chipper when they're getting up in the morning. Mind you, it's not like there's a cloud of darkness surrounding her, it's just that it's not that bright and sunny either. Also, she's not a great interviewer... which may stem from the problem that she doesn't seem all that bright and you need someone who's fast on their feet, esp when they're paired up with Lauer who's got a quick wit. I think Natalie Morales is good as the "Ann Curry Replacement" sitting at the news desk and doing occaisional segments.

Longtime contributor to NBC's "Today," Natalie Morales, has been promoted to national correspondent, it was announced in New York Thursday.

Morales has filled in for the departing Katie Couric, among others, on the morning news show and was among the candidates for Couric's job, which went to Meredith Vieira, The Hollywood Reporter said.
NBC rewarded Morales by making her national correspondent, which means in addition to her reporting duties, she will regularly appear during the third hour of "Today."
